Running a successful holiday business in the UK depends on many things and being able to cope with the changing weather is always an issue. So having a heating system you can depend on is vital both for the comfort of your guests and the running costs of the business. Choosing two Windhager biomass boilers in 2014 to power their district heating system, Lindleys Farm had made a shrewd choice for their holiday cottages, cost effective, efficient and green.
In recent years the system had started to suffer from minor leaks and blocked plate heat exchangers (PHE’s). The most likely cause was attributed to an initial poor installation and very likely no inhibitor in the system. Regular loss of pressure and manually refilling with untreated mains water had heightened the issues.
The revised heating system now provides an efficient district heating system with the added protection of chemical free high purity water. This chemical free alternative is able to protect heating systems from scale and corrosion. It also makes future maintenance easier with no chemical residue and waste products to dispose of.
In 2024 Windhager, aware of the situation and the risk to their boilers were considering the installation of a Filter Pot (side stream filter and dosing unit) with which to dose the system with fresh chemical inhibitors. Adoption into the BWT family and a timely CPD presentation by BWT’S Chris Hobbs and Wayne Speed, led Oliver Duckworth and his team to the conclusion that BWT’s ‘chemical free’ approach to heating protection was a better option and worth evaluating.
With cost, efficiency and green credentials established, it was agreed that the system should be drained down and thoroughly flushed through before refilling with high purity optimised water using the BWT MOVE power. The MOVE power has been designed and developed to deliver high volumes of high purity water for the filling and protection of heating systems without chemicals. With the system charged the next step was the installation of a BWT AQA Therm HES unit with an SRC-L cartridge, in conjunction with Mikrofill auto pressurisation unit to provide high purity optimised water for whenever the system calls for a top up.
The Result:
The revised heating system now provides an efficient district heating system with the added protection of chemical free high purity water. This chemical free alternative is able to protect heating systems from scale and corrosion. It also makes future maintenance easier with no chemical residue and waste products to dispose of.
